George Tenegal’s musical life began in the fourth grade when he joined the St. Sabina School Choir, under the direction of Sister Marie Juan OP. He began piano lessons at the age of twelve and went to study with Sister Marie Juan as a sophomore in high school. Her fine teaching and encouragement guided him onto the best path for all of his future studies. In his junior year George became the accompanist for the Leo High School Glee Club, thus developing his skill as an accompanist, and continuing his great love for vocal music. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from DePaul University in Chicago, as a student of Thaddeus Kozuch, and graduated as the “Outstanding Senior”. While at DePaul, he was the accompanist for the university chorus and coached and accompanied in many different voice studios. He furthered his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, Austria, under the tutelage of Walter Robert. He was awarded a full scholarship to study at the Villa Schifanoia in Florence, Italy, where he received his Master of Music degree in piano performance, as a student of Orazio Frugoni. Subsequent teachers include William Browning, Dmitry Paperno, Clara Siegel, and Michael Ruiz. George was the winner of several concerto competitions and received the Tuley Award, the Dasch Award, the Illinois Federation of Music Clubs Award, the Dr. Becker Music Scholarship, and the Schmitt Academic Scholarship. He was also a prize winner in the IBLA International Piano Competition, in both the soloist and accompanist categories, in Ragusa, Italy.
George Tenegal is on the faculty of North Park University as a vocal-coach and voice studio accompanist and teaches Italian, Latin, Spanish, French, German, and English diction. He was a professor on the faculty of DePaul University for many years, where he taught piano, coached singers, gave language diction classes, and taught French Vocal Literature. He is one of Chicago’s foremost vocal-coaches and accompanists, and has worked in this capacity in many of the most prestigious voice studios for over thirty-five years. He has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras and has given many solo and ensemble recitals both here and in Europe. He has also performed on many television programs and has performed at Ravinia and Orchastra Hall in Chicago.
